Mogadishu, Somalia — In a significant development, the United Nations has issued a security advisory warning of potential hostile use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) by the militant group Al Shabaab.
This marks the first time such a threat has been formally recognized in Somalia, underscoring the evolving tactics of the insurgent group.
According to a classified memo from the Department of Safety and Security (DSS) for Somalia, reports indicate that Al Shabaab may be in possession of UAVs, possibly equipped for surveillance and weaponized attacks.
The advisory, dated August 1, 2024, emphasizes the importance of heightened awareness and preparedness among UN personnel in the region.
The security advisory outlines several urgent recommendations for UN staff, including avoiding crowded areas lacking overhead protection, remaining vigilant for UAV sightings, and following security protocols to ensure safety.
The advisory specifies that these measures take effect immediately, with restrictions in place for all UN personnel within the International Compound (IC) from 1800 hours on August 1, 2024, until further notice.
This unprecedented alert highlights the increasing sophistication of al-Shabab’s operations, as the group has traditionally relied on conventional ground attacks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The introduction of drones could signal a new phase in the group’s strategy, potentially increasing the threat to both military and civilian targets.
UN security officials are corroborating the reports and enhancing security measures within key locations, including the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and other critical infrastructures.
The advisory calls for immediate reporting of any UAV sightings to the Security Operations Center (SOC) and adherence to emergency protocols in case of drone identification or attack.
In the memo seen by the Somali Standard, the UN’s principal security adviser for Somalia has urged all UN personnel to maintain high levels of vigilance and follow the issued guidelines meticulously to mitigate the risk posed by this new threat vector.
In response to this development, security experts highlight the need for adaptive and proactive measures to address the evolving tactics of extremist groups in the region.
