Mogadishu (Somalistandard) – Somalia’s Prime Minister, Hamse Abdi Barre, is facing mounting pressure to step down amid a no-confidence vote campaign against him.
Members of Parliament (MPs) organizing the impeachment motion against him are accusing Barre of incompetence, executive and failing to tackle corruption and fulfill promises made to the Somali people.
The prime minister’s leadership has been marred by power struggles among rival politicians, which have been further complicated by the security challenges posed by the Al-Shabaab group.
There are concerns that the ongoing campaign to impeach him could jeopardize the progress made in recent years, after decades of conflict, and a vote of confidence is expected to be held soon.
The move to impeach Barre has drawn mixed reactions, with some arguing that it reflects the government’s inability to effectively tackle Somalia’s issues, while others see it as a political ploy that could destabilize the country.
His government has faced criticism on a wide range of issues, including security, economy, domestic politics, and social affairs since he took office.
The impeachment process comes at a time of escalating tensions between the Federal Government and regional governments over power and resource sharing.
Analysts predict that the possible removal of Barre could trigger political crisis snd exacerbate the political turmoil in Somalia in the coming months.
