Cairo, Egypt (Somalistandard) – In a significant move towards regional cooperation, Egypt and Syria have announced plans to strengthen their ties, with the two nations agreeing to work together on a range of issues. The announcement came during the first official visit by a Syrian foreign minister to Cairo in over 10 years.

Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad was welcomed by his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukry, as he arrived at Egypt’s foreign ministry on Saturday. The visit marks a significant moment in relations between the two countries, which have historically been strained.

Since the start of the conflict in Syria in 2011, relations between the two nations have been fraught. Egypt was one of several Arab states to withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus as a result of the conflict, and the two countries have had a tense relationship ever since.

However, in recent months, there have been signs of a thaw in relations between the two countries, with several Arab states moving to restore ties with President Bashar al Assad’s government. Egypt has been particularly active in this regard, hosting a series of high-level meetings with Syrian officials.

During his visit, Mekdad met with several high-ranking Egyptian officials. The two sides discussed a range of issues, including economic cooperation, regional security, and the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Following the meeting, both sides expressed their commitment to strengthening their ties and working together to address the challenges facing the region.

The visit is seen as a positive step towards greater regional cooperation and stability, and could pave the way for further reconciliation between Syria and its Arab neighbors.
