Mogadishu (Somalistandard) – The mayor of the Somali capital, has received criticism for a video showing him assaulting and whipping young men and women on the city’s Liido beach in Mogadishu, which sparked a significant public outcry.
However, Yusuf Jimale AKA Madale who also doubles as tje governor of Banadir has defended his actions, stating that the young individuals were involved in drug use and immoral conduct, which has become a growing problem in the city amidst the emergence of youth gangs.
In response to the drug crisis, the regional administration conducted a second day operation against drug gangs in MMogadisu with Mr. Maddale leading the operation, targeting known drug use areas, resulting in the arrest of numerous young men and women which also led to the seizure of approximately 50 Somali military uniforms and several AK-47 rifles, which were handed over to the Banadir police chief.
Despite the backlash, the the mayor insisted that the administration is committed to ridding Mogadishu of narcotics and the areas where they are used so that young people can secure their futures, emphasizing his responsibility to protect the morality of Mogadishu’s youth.
