(Somalistandard) – Arsenal’s bid to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League was foiled by Roberto Firmino’s dramatic late equalizer in a pulsating match against Liverpool at Anfield.
The Gunners had a comfortable two-goal advantage within the first half-hour, aiming for their first win at Liverpool since 2012. However, their lack of discipline cost them dearly as Liverpool mounted a spirited comeback.
Gabriel Martinelli took advantage of sloppy defending from Liverpool to put Arsenal ahead after just eight minutes, followed by Gabriel Jesus rising unmarked to head home at the Kop End, positioning Arsenal with a commanding lead.
But Liverpool came to life after a flashpoint between Granit Xhaka and Trent Alexander-Arnold just before half-time, with Mohamed Salah scoring at the far post to set up an enthralling second half.
The match was not without controversy, as there was a bizarre incident involving referee’s assistant Constantine Hatzidakis seemingly elbowing Liverpool defender Robertson as the teams left the field at a half-time.
The second half was equally dramatic, with Salah missing his second successive penalty when he shot wide after Rob Holding fouled Diogo Jota. However, Firmino came to Liverpool’s rescue with a header at the far post from Alexander-Arnold’s cross, finding the back of the net with just three minutes left on the clock.
In a frantic finale, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who had already made crucial saves from Darwin Nunez, pulled off two incredible stops from Salah and Ibrahima Konate, preventing Liverpool from snatching a win.
As a result, Mikel Arteta’s pace-setting Arsenal had to settle for a point, with Liverpool fully deserving their share of the spoils for a thrilling fightback at Anfield.
The result cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to six points, setting up an intriguing title race as the season progresses.
