(Somalistandard) – Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the Premier League’s top four are still alive following their dramatic 4-3 victory against Tottenham on Sunday. The win came courtesy of a stoppage-time strike from Diogo Jota, which ruined Tottenham’s comeback from three goals down in a thrilling encounter at Anfield.
Liverpool started the match in dominant fashion, with Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz scoring in the opening five minutes. Mohamed Salah’s penalty made it 3-0, before Harry Kane reduced the deficit with his 208th Premier League goal. Late goals from Son Heung-min and Richarlison set up a tense finale, but Jota’s winner gave Liverpool the victory.
Liverpool’s manager Jurgen Klopp’s wild celebration resulted in him injuring himself and receiving a booking, with Tottenham’s caretaker boss Ryan Mason furious with Klopp’s show of emotion in front of the visitors’ bench.
While Tottenham’s top-four hopes have faded, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last six games and have won four in a row to climb to fifth place. They still have a mountain to climb to reach the top four, as they sit seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United, who have a game in hand.
Tottenham, who are currently in sixth place, are without a win in four games and sit nine points adrift of the top four with four matches left. Mason claimed that Jota should have been sent off for fouling Oliver Skipp, but the result stood.
The victory was crucial for Liverpool’s hopes of salvaging a disappointing season by qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Klopp acknowledged that they got away with it thanks to Jota’s heroics, but criticised referee Paul Tierney.
