(Somalistandard) – Manchester United crashed out of the Europa League quarter-finals after a lacklustre display against Sevilla on Thursday evening.
The Premier League club were completely outplayed by their Spanish opponents, who capitalised on United’s mistakes to secure a convincing 3-0 win.
Sevilla took the lead in the eighth minute following a shocking error from United’s Harry Maguire, with Youssef En-Nesyri slotting home the opener. Loic Bade then doubled Sevilla’s lead shortly after half-time with a looping header.
United continued to struggle and gifted Sevilla their third goal in the 84th minute when En-Nesyri took advantage of a terrible mistake from goalkeeper David de Gea. The result sees Sevilla progress to the semi-finals of the Europa League, where they will face Juventus.
The defeat will come as a blow to United, who had high hopes of progressing in the competition. It was also the first of a series of crucial games for the club, who face Brighton in the FA Cup semi finals on Sunday and a key Premier League match against Tottenham next week.
United were well below their best throughout the match, with their midfield being overrun and the attack creating almost nothing going forward. The defence was also guilty of making two terrible mistakes, which ultimately cost the team the match.
Sevilla, on the other hand, put in a dominant performance and fully deserved their victory. The Spanish club will be hoping to continue their good form in the competition and secure a place in the final.
