Mogadishu Hotels Hit by Government Ban on Hosting Opposition Gatherings

Mogadishu, Somalia — A new government directive banning hotels and public venues from hosting opposition gatherings has sparked frustration among business owners in Somalia’s capital, who say the restrictions are not only political but also deeply personal, cutting off a vital stream of revenue.

For years, hotels in Mogadishu have benefited from the surge in political activity during the latter half of a president’s term. Opposition leaders regularly hold meetings, press conferences, and strategy sessions in these venues, drawing large crowds and boosting revenue for the hospitality sector.

With the new ban in place, many hotel owners say they are facing financial uncertainty.

“This decision is a direct attack on our businesses,” said a prominent hotel manager, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of government retaliation.

“We’ve always relied on political gatherings to stay afloat, especially in election cycles. This is not just about politics—it’s about survival.

The government has not provided an official comment for the sweeping ban, but officials have privately suggested that opposition gatherings pose security risks.

Critics, however, see the directive as an attempt to stifle political dissent.

Beyond the immediate financial impact, the long-term consequences could be even more severe.

In response to the restrictions, opposition groups have begun building their own private venues, a move that could permanently alter the economic landscape for Mogadishu’s hotels.

The shift means the government itself could lose out on tax revenues generated by these gatherings, further deepening tensions between authorities and the business community.

So far, the administration has remained silent on the concerns raised by hotel owners. Meanwhile, opposition leaders continue to push back, hosting meetings in defiance of the directive, setting the stage for a growing political and economic standoff in the heart of Somalia’s capital.
