Mogadishu (Somalistandard) – After nearly 24 years of legal disputes, Somalia has regained control of its embassy building in Yemen, which had been occupied by local Yemenis.
The Somali government announced the victory, the culmination of a lengthy legal battle that finally came to a resolution with a court ruling in its favor in Sana this week.
The dispute over the ownership of the Somali embassy building in Yemen had been ongoing since the 1990s when Somalia descended into civil war.
During the conflict, the embassy was abandoned, and local Yemenis had taken control of the building.
Despite multiple efforts by the Somali government to reclaim the property over the years, legal challenges and conflict in Yemen had delayed the resolution for over two decades.
This recent court ruling has been seen as a significant victory for Somalia in its efforts to maintain its diplomatic presence in Yemen and uphold its sovereignty.
The Somali diplomatic mission in Yemen is now expected to move into the embassy building, allowing Somalia to fully operate its embassy and consulate services to Yemen and strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Somali government has expressed its gratitude to the Yemeni authorities for their cooperation in resolving the long-standing dispute and allowing Somalia to reclaim its embassy building.
Somalia, a country recovering from decades of conflict and instability, considers its diplomatic missions abroad as critical assets in promoting its national interests and engaging with the international community.
The regaining of control over its embassy building in Yemen is seen as a significant milestone in Somalia’s ongoing efforts to rebuild its diplomatic presence and establish strong relations with other countries.
