Twelve Militants Escape Puntland Prison; Nine Recaptured in Manhunt

GALKAYO, Somalia — A major manhunt is underway in central  Somalia after twelve convicted terrorists escaped from a high-security prison in Galkayo town, authorities said on Monday.

The escapees, members of the militant group Al-Shabab, had been serving sentences of death or life imprisonment for their involvement in a series of violent attacks, including assassinations of government officials and bombings.

The circumstances of their escape which occurred on Sunday night have not been fully disclosed, but officials described the breakout as an “opportunistic” event.

Security forces responded swiftly, launching an intensive search operation that has so far led to the recapture of nine of the twelve fugitives.

“We are confident that the remaining three will be apprehended soon,” said a senior security official, who spoke to the local media.

The incident has sparked alarm in Galkayo, a city that has endured numerous attacks by Al-Shabab militants over the years.

Residents expressed concern over the potential threat posed by the escapees still at large.

Puntland security authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the escape, which has led to widespread speculation and criticism over the apparent lapses in prison security.

The lack of communication from officials has only heightened public anxiety.

This is not the first security breach at the Galkayo prison.

Several years ago, a similar escape took place involving Al-Shabab inmates, some of whom were subsequently killed or recaptured, while others successfully evaded police manhunt and rejoined the militant group.

Their escape has raised concerns about the security of the region’s detention facilities.

However, as the search for the remaining fugitives continues, authorities have sought to reassure the public and have vowed to strengthen security measures at detention facilities across the region.
